Tungaloy Introduces Barrel Style Cutting Tool Inserts

Tungaloy has expanded its BallFinishNose indexable tool capabilities of profiling complex 3D contours by adding five “barrel-style” inserts for TCGT Insert improved cycle time reduction in contoured workpieces.

According to Tungaloy, BallFinishNose is an effective tool in finishing and semi-finishing, particularly on geometric surfaces and complex 3D contours common to die-mold or aerospace applications. The insert features an asymmetric shape, which enables users to use the same side of the insert always facing the same direction when set in the tool body, providing the tool with high repeatable accuracy and reliability, surface quality and predictable tool life.

Tungaloy has added five barrel-style inserts to BallFinishNose to increase its efficiency of 3D profile milling capability. The barrel inserts, named due to the resemblance of the cutting edge shape to a barrel’s profile, consist of cutting edges with larger radii compared with ball nose end mills, creating greater contact between the cutting edge and workpiece. This permits larger step-over increments, maximizing efficiency without compromising on cusp heights and enabling the removal of more material with fewer passes.

The barrel style inserts can be used with existing BallFinishNose cutter bodies. The inserts are designed to fit the cutter bodies in diameters ranging from 12 to 30 mm (from .472" to 1.181"). The barrel style inserts’ cutting edge radii are available in 30, 40, 50, 62.5 and 75 mm, and each set of inserts fit the cutter in diameters 12, 16, 20, 25 and 30 mm, respectively.

Featuring the coolant channels on the insert faces just as those on existing BallFinishNose APMT Insert inserts, the barrel style inserts reportedly ensure optimal coolant delivery close to the cutting area, providing stable and long tool life.

The barrel-style inserts are offered in CH315 insert grade. A combination of extreme wear resistance made possible by the latest physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating technology and fracture-resistant dedicated carbide substrate, the latest CH315 provides the insert with long tool life.

With the new barrel-style inserts in the line, BallFinishNose lends itself to finish machining of 3D complex surfaces and other intricate profiles typical in die-mold and aerospace segments.

T Style Ceramic Inserts, Holders Extends Tool Strength, Stability for Difficult Materials

Seco has expanded the roughing and semi-finishing performance capabilities of its Secomax CS100 sialon ceramic grade by adding inserts with T-style edge preparation. Featuring a free-cutting, extremely sharp geometry, the new inserts bring strength, stability and longevity to the machining of nickel-based superalloys in unstable Cutting Inserts conditions.

Well-suited for turning applications that require tight tolerances and low cutting forces, the T-style (chamfered) CS100 inserts are available in 20-degree chamfers that range from 0.002" to 0.004" (0.05 mm to 0.1 mm) in width. The sharp, negative reinforced cutting edges on these inserts absorb some of the high cutting force and pressure that would otherwise be placed on the machine setups and workpieces. As a result, these inserts eliminate the risk of workpiece deformation, especially in thin-walled components, as well as reduce excessive vibrations that shorten tool life and negatively impact surface finish.

The characteristics of the T-style inserts complement the existing S-style (chamfered and honed) CS100 products designed to handle high cutting forces in rigid, stable machining conditions.Tungsten Carbide Inserts Collectively, the T-style and S-style inserts in the CS100 line have high abrasion resistance and toughness that extend tool life and enable high cutting speeds when processing challenging materials such as Inconel, MAR, RENE and Waspaloy. The inserts are ideal for achieving high productivity, consistent quality, and a low cost per part in the aerospace and power generation industries, the company says.

In addition, the company has added N-class (Quick-Line) ceramic insert holders. Available in standard shaft and Seco-Capto styles, these holders have special pocket designs and clamping systems that accommodate the different thicknesses and missing center-mounting holes that are common with these types of inserts.

Platinum Tooling Offers Heimatec Base Mount Tooling

Platinum Tooling Technologies offers Heimatec Base Mount Tooling (BMT) products. In addition to standard X- and Z-axis tools, styles such as adjustable tools, speed increasers and internal-coolant tools ranging to 140 bar (2,000 psi) are now available in an assortment of standard BMT tooling types, including BMT 45, 55, 65 and 75.

BMT tooling is supplied with Heimatec’s U-Tec flexible machining system, which provides high power transmission via polygonal drive. An integrated collet nut, with easy changeout, can convert the output to arbor (for face mills), Weldon or ER collet extensions. The U-Tec system further allows the cutting tool to be in closer proximity TNGG Insert to the bearing, which results in higher rigidity, the Cutting Tool Inserts company says.
